Habisa dalma is a very famous Odisha recipe. People are making this dalma in the month of Kartika. There are main vegetables are using to make Habisa dalma that is pole potatoes, colacasia, elephant apple and raw banana. This Kartik Purnima special dalma is the best combination with Arua bhata (White Rice).

Kartika month Odia Habisa dalma is a special kind of dalma that is prepared without turmeric. It is a traditional Odia recipe. This dalma is a no onion garlic item. Odisha is one of the eastern state in Indian subcontinent. Among all the Odia cuisine, the dalma dish is the most popular one.

Well dalma is a curry prepared using lentils and some vegetables and finally a tempering is added. There are many variation of this curry depending upon the use of onion garlic, different varieties of dals and vegetables. Without onion garlic version is the preferable version in temple and during festivals.

Today I have come up with a different kind of dalma as Habisha dalma which is particularly prepared during the Kartik month of Hindu calendar in each and every Odia households.

Kartik masa is perhaps the holiest month in the Hindu calendar. Most people in Odisha give up non vegetarian items for the entire month. If not for the entire month, at least the last five days or Panchuka as it is called in Odia is strictly abided by many.

As Habisa was primarily observed by widows in the earlier times, certain restrictions are imposed on the diet. But now a days quite a few married women observe the fasts and even few rare men have started following these customs.

Ingredients

  • Yellow moong dal- 1 cup

  • Diced aw banana- 1no

  • Diced colocasia- 3 – 4 nos

  • Diced yam- 100 gm

  • Salt to taste

  • For tempering
  • Ghee- 2 tbsp

  • Dry red chillies- 4 nos

  • Cumin seeds- 2 tbsp

  • Hing- 1 tsp

  • Grated ginger- 1 tsp

  • For garnishing
  • Grated coconut

  • Roasted cumin and dry red. chilli powder

Directions

  • First heat a pressure cooker on medium flame, then add moong dal into it and saute it for 3 – 4 minutes. Then wash and drain the moong dal and keep aside.
  • Now in this cooker add water with cut vegetables. Once boil will start, then add the moong dal, grated ginger and salt as per taste into them.
  • Mix everything using a spatula and cover the lid of the pressure cooker.
  • Cook for 1 – 2 whistles or till all the vegetables are done well.
  • Now turn of the heat and allow the steam to escape automatically.
  • For tempering
  • Heat a tadka pan on medium flame. Add ghee, when ghee becomes hot then add cumin seeds, dry red chillies, hing and some grated ginger into the tadka pan and saute it for 30 seconds.
  • Then pour the tadka into the pressure cooker and mix it properly.
  • For garnishing
  • Now. Sprinkle grated coconut and roasted cumin seed and dry red chilli powder and give a mix.
  • Serve hot with rice topped with ghee.
