Tandoori chicken is a chicken dish prepared by roasting chicken marinated in yogurt and spices in a tandoor or an oven. The dish originated from the Indian subcontinent and is popular in many other parts of the world. Tandoori chicken originated from the Mughlai cuisine and is one of the most popular chicken appetisers that has stolen the heart of many across the globe. This recipe will give you the soft, juicy, flavourful and delicious grilled chicken with bursting flavours of spices and a unique smoky aroma. You can make this tandoori chicken in an oven or on a tandoor base on gas. This recipe is easy to make and looks very beautiful. I love making this recipe for parties, it tastes great, can be made quickly and everyone loves it very much. My husband and my kid loves it very much. I mostly prepare for them. The bright red colour of the marination comes from the chilli powder which is not very hot and the same time raw mustard oil gives it a kick which is essential to tandoori chicken recipe. It is a lip smacking flavourful dry chicken dish from Indian kitchen, and it happens to be that one dish that a party or gathering just cannot do without.

You will just say ‘wow’ when you take that first bite with green chutney and some sliced onions. It was traditionally made in a clay oven or tandoor, but since the modern homes do not have clay oven anymore, my recipes show you how to make it in a pan over the gas. Cooking in an oven or stove top, gvies it a nice smoky flavour too.

Tandoori chicken is a chicken dish prepared by roasting chicken marinated in yogurt and spices in a tandoor or an oven. Originated from the Mughlai cuisine and one of the most popular chicken appetisers.


  • Chicken- leg pc or thigh pc 500 gm

  • Lemon- 1/2

  • Salt as per taste

  • Turmeric powder- 1 tsp

  • Kashmiri red chilli powder- 1 tbsp

  • Tandoori masala powder- 2 tbsp

  • Ginger garlic paste- 1 tbsp

  • Chicken masala- 1 tbsp

  • Mustard oil- 1 tbsp

  • Butter for frying

  • A pinch of red food colour (its optional )

  • Curd- 1/2 cup


  • First make some deep cuts into the chicken pieces.
  • For marination get a large bowl, add yogurt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, ginger garlic paste, tandoori masala powder, chicken masala powder, kasoori methi, lemon juice, mustard oil and salt as per taste into it.
  • Then mix it well, add the chicken into it and mix it properly. Keep aside marinated chicken for 1 hour.
  • Now in a pan add some butter, when butter will start melted, then place the marinated chicken pieces in the pan.
  • Cook each sides properly until you get nice golden brown colour and cook for 10 – 12 minutes.
  • When When chicken will cook properly, heat the tandoor base on the gas on medium flame and burn it for 2 – 3 minutes.
  • Now chicken tandoori is ready. Garnish it with onions, lemon slices with mayonnaise or green chutney.
